What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization Explained for Online Stores

What is AEO? AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It means shaping your website so that the AI tools that answer questions, such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude, can find your pages, trust the facts on them and repeat those facts with a link back to you.

On an online store, that means letting the AI search crawlers in, keeping your product facts the same everywhere they appear, and putting those facts in plain text near the top of each page. Google’s own guide, published in May 2026, calls this work “still SEO.” The difference is the goal. Instead of a shopper clicking your result in a list, the answer itself comes from your store. The audience is large: Google said in June 2026 that AI Overviews have “over 2.5 billion monthly active users.”

In short

  • AEO (answer engine optimization) makes your pages a source that AI answers draw on. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the same work aimed at being named inside AI-written answers.
  • Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO and needs no special files, markup or Markdown.
  • On a store, the work is crawler access, product data that matches across your pages and feeds, and answers written in text near the top.
  • You can measure it: Bing Webmaster Tools counts Copilot citations, Search Console shows AI feature impressions, and Google Analytics shows referral visits from AI tools.

AEO vs GEO vs SEO (and LLMO), explained with one shopper question

Take an invented example: Tidewater Pet Supply, a Shopify store that sells dog beds. A shopper wants a washable bed for a 90-pound dog.

  • SEO (search engine optimization): the shopper types “orthopedic dog bed large dog” into Google or Bing, sees a list of results, and clicks Tidewater’s product page.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization): the shopper asks “what size bed does a 90 pound dog need?” and an AI Overview or a Copilot answer quotes Tidewater’s sizing line and links to it as a source.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization): the shopper asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a good washable orthopedic bed for a big dog, and the written answer names Tidewater as one of the options.
  • LLMO (LLM optimization): a newer label for the same goal, named after the large language models behind these tools.

In an SEO vs GEO comparison, SEO wins the click on a results page, while generative engine optimization wins a mention inside an answer the shopper may read without clicking. AEO falls in between, because the answer quotes your page and credits it.

The work underneath is mostly shared. Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features says “optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” Its page on AI features adds that there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode” beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. If your basic search setup is weak, fix that first; our guide to Shopify SEO covers the groundwork.

How AI tools build an answer about your products

AI tools draw on up to three sources: a search index built by crawlers, pages fetched live when a user asks, and product data merchants send in feeds. As of October 2026, this is how each tool describes it.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode answer from Google’s search index. A page “must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.” For one question, the AI may run several related searches across subtopics, which Google calls query fan-out. Google also says Merchant Center and Business Profiles “can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results.” AI Mode shopping draws on the Shopping Graph, which Google put at “more than 50 billion product listings” in May 2025.

ChatGPT finds pages through OpenAI’s search crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Model training uses a different crawler, GPTBot, and OpenAI says “each setting is independent of the others.” On the product side, OpenAI’s commerce documentation describes merchants sending ChatGPT a product feed.

Perplexity crawls with PerplexityBot, which it says is “designed to surface and link websites in search results” and is “not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.”

Microsoft Copilot cites web pages, and Bing Webmaster Tools reports those citations (more in step 7). Product feeds from Microsoft Merchant Center, Microsoft says, “help inform organic Copilot results.”

Claude indexes pages for its search with Claude-SearchBot and fetches pages for a user’s question with Claude-User. ClaudeBot is Anthropic’s training crawler. Anthropic says blocking the first two may reduce your visibility in Claude.

What AEO looks like on a store page: a worked example

This example is invented to show the method. Tidewater Pet Supply is not a real store, and the product facts and price below are made up.

Before, the top of the product page read:

Treat your best friend to the comfort they deserve! Our premium Harbor bed is crafted with love for dogs who like to stretch out. Check the Specs tab for sizes and see our Shipping page for details.

After the rewrite:

The Harbor orthopedic dog bed is a 4-inch memory foam bed for dogs up to 90 pounds, and it measures 44 x 34 inches. The cover zips off and is machine washable, and the base liner is waterproof. It costs $129, ships free in the US in 3 to 5 business days, and can be returned within 30 days.

Why the rewrite works

The first version is friendly and gives an AI tool nothing to quote when a shopper asks which bed fits a 90-pound dog. The second version gives size, weight limit, care, price, shipping and returns in three sentences. That follows Microsoft Bing’s advice for AI answers: “one- to two-sentence responses that directly address a question,” with specific claims. Its own example is a “42 dB dishwasher designed for open-concept kitchens” instead of just “quiet dishwasher.”

What changed Before After
Size and weight limit In a Specs tab In the first sentence
Care Not mentioned Cover zips off, machine washable
Price, shipping and returns On other pages In the opening paragraph
Size chart An image A text table lower on the page
Same facts elsewhere Not checked Matched in structured data and the Merchant Center feed

Microsoft lists “putting key information only in images” and hiding answers “in tabs or expandable menus” among the mistakes to avoid. Google asks that structured data match “the visible text on the page.” When the page says $129 and the feed says $119, an AI tool is left with two prices for one bed.

Northern Marine Electronics BigCommerce store with shipping and support promises in text boxes, a row of marine brand logos and a category grid with product photos
The Northern Marine Electronics BigCommerce store, designed by OC Designs Online: shipping, returns and phone support stated in plain words on the page.

The same approach works on category pages, where two plain sentences above the grid say what the category holds and who it suits.

How to do answer engine optimization on your store, step by step

These steps follow the AI companies’ own documentation.

1. Let the search crawlers in, including through Cloudflare

Check robots.txt for Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot. OpenAI and Anthropic run separate search and training crawlers, and Perplexity says its crawler isn’t used for training, so you can allow OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot, for example (see OpenAI’s crawler overview). Google and Bing use one crawler for search and AI features, so blocking Googlebot or Bingbot takes you out of search too.

robots.txt is only one layer. Cloudflare has asked every new domain whether to allow AI crawlers since July 2025. On September 15, 2026 it began replacing its “Block AI Bots” switch with separate Search, Training and Agent controls. Cloudflare’s post on the change says choosing Block stops Applebot, Bingbot and Googlebot from reaching your site, search included. To “stop training and keep search, use Disallow AI Training.” The setting sits in your domain’s Security Settings.

2. Check the Search generative AI setting in Search Console

As of August 31, 2026, every site in Search Console has a Search generative AI control under Settings. It decides whether your pages can appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover. Sites are included by default, and Google says the control “isn’t used as a ranking or inclusion signal affecting other parts of Search.” Check that nobody switched it off. Google’s help page for the control says content is excluded within 1 to 2 days after it goes live.

3. Keep your product feed and your pages in step

Google told retailers in September 2026 that “Holiday success ultimately relies on an accurate product feed.” Merchant Center data can help your products show in Google’s AI answers, and Microsoft Merchant Center feeds inform Copilot. The same goes for a product feed you send to ChatGPT. Whatever the channel, the price, stock, shipping and returns in each feed must match the product page. When products come from supplier files, one import should update both, which is the job of catalog and pricing automation.

4. Add product structured data that matches the page

Product markup with an Offer can make a page eligible for merchant listings that show “price, availability, and shipping and return information.” Google’s AI guide says structured data “isn’t required for generative AI search” and lists overfocusing on it as a myth, so treat markup as accuracy work. Since November 2025, Google supports store-wide shipping policy markup, and a return policy can sit under Organization markup or in Merchant Center.

5. Write answer-first copy on the pages buyers ask about

Use the worked example as the pattern: the answer in the first one or two sentences, facts with numbers and units, and key details in text instead of images, PDFs or closed tabs. Google says you don’t need to write “in a specific way just for generative AI search,” so write for the shopper and put the answer first. Start with best sellers, top category pages and the questions customers email about.

6. Earn real mentions, not bought ones

GEO aims at being named in answers, and Google’s guide warns that “seeking inauthentic ‘mentions’ across the web isn’t as helpful as it might seem.” On May 15, 2026, Google clarified that its spam policies also apply to its generative AI responses. Keep stock and prices current, and earn reviews and listings from real customers and real sites in your niche.

7. Measure citations and AI referrals

Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report on February 10, 2026. It counts how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and select partner tools, and lists the “grounding queries” behind those citations. Search Console’s Generative AI performance report shows how often links to your site appeared in Google’s AI features. In Google Analytics, look in the referral report for visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com.

If you would rather hand these checks to someone else, our AI SEO services cover them for Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce and eBay sellers.

What the official guidance says you can skip

Google’s guide has a section titled “Mythbusting generative AI search: what you don’t need to do.” Several popular tactics are on it.

An llms.txt file is a proposal from September 2024, still “open for community input.” Google’s June 15, 2026 changelog says “these files aren’t needed for Google Search (and won’t negatively or positively impact your visibility or rankings).” We found no OpenAI, Anthropic or Perplexity page saying their answers read one, so the file is optional.

FAQ markup no longer earns a rich result. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026 and removed the documentation on June 15. Questions and answers on the page can still help shoppers, and Bing lists FAQ sections among the formats AI systems can reference.

Chunking, which means cutting pages into tiny pieces for AI, is also on Google’s myths list: “There’s no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces for AI to better understand it.”

None of these companies’ documentation offers a way to guarantee a mention in their answers. ChatGPT does carry ads now: OpenAI runs a crawler, OAI-AdsBot, “to validate the safety of web pages submitted as ads on ChatGPT.” Paid ads are a separate product; AEO works on the organic results.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO stand for?

In search and marketing, AEO stands for answer engine optimization. The same letters mean other things in other fields, so add “SEO” or “AI” when you search for it.

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of getting your brand named inside the answers AI tools write, such as ChatGPT or Perplexity. It rests on the same groundwork as AEO: pages AI crawlers can read, product facts that match everywhere, and real mentions on other sites.

Does AEO apply to eBay listings?

Partly. eBay runs the pages, so a seller can’t change robots.txt or structured data on eBay. What you control is the listing itself: a title, item specifics and a description that state the facts plainly, in real text. Custom eBay listing templates should keep the product details as text, not as words inside images.

Does blocking Google-Extended take my store out of AI Overviews?

No. Google says Google-Extended “does not impact a site’s inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search.” It controls Gemini training and grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI. To leave AI Overviews and AI Mode, use the Search Console control or snippet controls such as nosnippet.

What is query fan-out?

Google defines it as “a set of concurrent, related queries generated by the model to request more information.” One shopper question can turn into several searches about size, material or care, so answer those follow-up questions on the category page or product page itself.

Do product photos and videos count?

Google says its generative AI search features “can bring in relevant images and video.” Microsoft warns against putting key information only in images, though. Repeat the important facts in the page text.

How fast do AI tools notice a robots.txt change?

OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours for its systems to adjust. Perplexity says up to 24 hours. Google’s Search generative AI control is a separate setting, and it excludes content within 1 to 2 days.

Should AI write my product descriptions?

It can draft them. Google says you don’t need a special style for AI, and its spam policies cover AI responses. Accuracy is the test: every fact must match the product, the feed and the markup, which is why AI product content pipelines have your team check each description before it goes live.
