Why it matters

What AI SEO services include

Shoppers now ask ChatGPT, Google’s AI Mode or Perplexity which product to buy, and the answer names a handful of stores. You will see the work of getting into those answers called AI SEO, answer engine optimization (AEO), generative engine optimization (GEO) or AI search optimization. Whatever the name, the job is to make sure AI tools can reach your pages, understand your products and trust your store enough to quote it.

The AI crawlers have to be allowed in, and Cloudflare or firewall settings can shut them out without the store owner knowing. Your product data has to be complete and consistent everywhere it appears, from product pages to your Google Merchant Center feed. And each important page needs the answer to the buyer’s question in plain text near the top, where an AI tool can lift it and credit you.

OC Designs is an ecommerce design studio and AI SEO agency founded by Frannie Kline. We have designed online stores since 2005, starting with eBay, and now build on Shopify, BigCommerce and WooCommerce. Our own site uses the setup we put in place for clients: structured data on every page, answer-first FAQs and open access for the AI search crawlers.

Tell us about your store

What you get

  • AI visibility audit

We ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude the questions your buyers ask, and record which stores they name and which pages they cite.

  • Crawler access and technical fixes

robots.txt, Cloudflare and firewall settings checked for Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, plus sitemaps, IndexNow and pages that load without scripts.

  • Product data and feeds

Product titles, attributes, GTINs, prices, stock, shipping and returns cleaned up in your store and in your Google Merchant Center feed, so every source says the same thing.

  • Structured data for stores

Product, Offer, shipping and return policy, review, breadcrumb and Organization markup across your whole catalog, on Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce or a custom site.

  • Answer-ready pages

Category pages, buying guides, comparisons and FAQs written in the words buyers use when they ask an AI tool for a recommendation.

  • Brand and review signals

Consistent business facts on your site, Google Business Profile and directories, a review plan, and listings on the sites AI tools read for your industry.

  • Monthly AI visibility reports

Your tracked questions asked again every month, with Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4 traffic from AI tools in one short report.

  • A team you can call

The people doing the work answer the phone Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 ET, and make the fixes on your store themselves.

The terms

SEO, AEO and GEO: what each one means

Agencies sell the same work as AI SEO, answer engine optimization services or generative engine optimization services. The difference between the three names is where you want to appear and how you measure it. Google’s view is that optimizing for its AI features is still SEO.

SEOAEO (answer engine optimization)GEO (generative engine optimization)
The goal Rank pages in the regular search results Be the source an AI tool quotes when it answers a question Be named and recommended inside AI-written answers

Where answers come from

How each AI tool finds stores, and what we set up

In short, each AI tool has to be allowed to read your site, and some also read product data. As of October 2026, this is what decides whether your store can appear in each one.

AI toolWhere it gets informationWhat we set up for your store
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode Google’s search index, plus Merchant Center and Business Profile data for products and stores. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and the site must stay included in the generative AI setting in Search Console, which is on by default. Indexing and snippet checks, Merchant Center feed quality, product structured data, clear answers in the page copy
ChatGPT search and shopping Pages fetched by OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot, plus product data that merchants or their store platforms share with OpenAI OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and the firewall, product data ready to share, clean product pages
Perplexity Pages fetched by PerplexityBot, its search crawler, which Perplexity says isn’t used for AI model training PerplexityBot access, sourced and dated answers on key pages
Microsoft Copilot Bing’s index; Microsoft recommends short direct answers, lists, tables and Q&A blocks Bing Webmaster Tools, IndexNow, answer blocks Bing can quote, Copilot citation reports
Claude Pages fetched by Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User; ClaudeBot collects content that may be used for training Search crawlers allowed, with the choice on training crawlers left to you

Warning signs

Why AI tools skip some stores

When a store never shows up in AI answers, the cause is usually one of these.

What you noticeLikely causeWhat we do about it
ChatGPT or Perplexity never cite your pages Their crawlers are blocked by robots.txt, a firewall rule or Cloudflare’s AI crawler settings Check every layer and allow the search crawlers you want
AI answers quote the wrong price, stock or return policy Product pages, feed and marketplace listings disagree with each other Make one set of product facts and publish it everywhere
Competitors are recommended for your own products Their pages answer the question plainly, while yours hide it in images or tabs Rewrite key pages so the answer is in readable text near the top
Your store appears for your brand name only Few category pages, guides or comparisons that match how buyers ask Plan pages around the questions buyers type into AI tools
Google shows your products, but AI Mode does not Gaps in your Merchant Center feed or product structured data Fill missing attributes, GTINs, shipping and returns data
AI tools describe your business wrongly Out-of-date facts on directories, profiles and old pages Correct the sources, then ask the same questions again

The audit

How we check your store’s AI search visibility

Every project starts with the same audit, so you see where you stand before you spend on fixes.

  1. List the questions buyers ask

We write 20 to 50 questions with you, from “best waterproof boots for hiking” to “is this part compatible with my car”, the way real shoppers ask them.

  2. Ask every AI tool

Each question goes to ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. We record which stores are named, which pages are cited and what is said about you.

  3. Check access and indexing

We test robots.txt, your firewall and Cloudflare settings with each crawler, check Google and Bing indexing, and look at how your pages render without scripts.

  4. Check product data

We compare your product pages, structured data and Merchant Center feed, and list missing attributes, mismatched prices and policy gaps.

  5. Deliver the plan

You get the findings, the fixes in order of impact and a fixed quote for the work. The audit results become the baseline for every monthly report.

Cost

What decides the cost of AI SEO services

We don’t publish one price, because a 50-product store and a 20,000-product store need very different work. Every project gets a fixed quote after a free consultation, and these are the things that set the price of our answer engine optimization services.

What we look atWhy it changes the work
Catalog size and data quality Clean, complete product data needs light work. Thousands of products with missing attributes or GTINs need a bigger cleanup.
Number of questions tracked Each tracked question is asked across every AI tool each month, so more questions mean more testing and reporting.
Pages to write or rewrite Guides, comparisons and category copy are planned, written and checked page by page.
Store platform Shopify, BigCommerce and WooCommerce each handle structured data and feeds differently; custom sites can need development work.
Where you sell Selling on eBay, Amazon or other marketplaces as well as your own store means more listings to keep consistent.
One-off or ongoing A one-time audit and fixes cost less than monthly tracking, content and reporting.

What works

What helps in AI search, and what doesn’t

Here is what the AI companies themselves say, as of October 2026, and how we act on it.

TacticWhat the official guidance saysHow we use it
An llms.txt file Google lists it among things you don’t need, and no major AI company has said its answers use it An optional extra that takes minutes, never sold as a ranking factor
FAQ markup for rich results Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026 Clear questions and answers on the page still help AI tools quote you
Structured data Helps Google understand products, but Google warns against overfocusing on it, and it must match what the page shows Accurate product, offer and policy markup, kept in step with the page
Blocking AI crawlers OpenAI and Anthropic run separate search and training crawlers; Google and Bing use one crawler, and some Cloudflare training blocks stop Googlebot too Search crawlers allowed, and training blocked only where it can’t hurt search
Content written just for AI Google lists rewriting pages just for AI and “chunking” content among the myths Pages written for shoppers, with the answer near the top
Guaranteed placement in ChatGPT Some AI tools sell ads, but no one can buy or guarantee a mention in the answer itself We report what changes each month instead of promising a spot

How our projects work
What are AI SEO services?

AI SEO services make a website easy for AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude to find and cite. For a store, the work covers crawler access, product data and feeds, structured data, pages that answer buyers’ questions, brand and review signals, and regular checks of what the AI tools say.

What is an AEO agency?

An AEO agency, or answer engine optimization agency, works to get a business quoted and named in AI answers from tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. For a store, that includes product data, feeds and structured data as well as page content.

What is AI search optimization called?

AI SEO, answer engine optimization (AEO), generative engine optimization (GEO) and LLM optimization (LLMO) all name the same work. AEO focuses on being quoted as a source, GEO on being named in AI-written answers, and both build on regular SEO.

Is SEO dead now that people use AI search?

No. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on its search index, and ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot also read the web through search crawlers. A store that search engines can’t read is hard for AI tools to find too, so good SEO is the starting point for AI visibility.

Can ChatGPT do SEO?

ChatGPT can help draft copy or suggest the questions buyers ask. It can’t check your crawler settings, product feed or Search Console unless you connect them, and its suggestions still need checking by someone with access to your store.

Can you guarantee my store will appear in ChatGPT?

No. No AI company sells or guarantees a place in its regular answers. We fix what keeps stores out, ask the same questions every month and show you what changed.

How much do AI SEO services cost?

It depends on the size of your catalog, the state of your product data, how many questions we track, how many pages need writing and whether you want ongoing reports. After a free consultation we send a fixed quote before any work starts.

How long until we see results in AI answers?

OpenAI and Perplexity say changes to crawler access take effect within about a day. No AI tool sets a timeline for appearing in its answers, and content and brand work takes longer and varies by tool, which is why we check again every month.

How do you measure AI search visibility?

We keep a fixed list of buyer questions and ask it across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude every month. We add Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools reports on Copilot citations, and visits and sales from AI tools in Google Analytics.

Can my products appear in ChatGPT shopping results?

ChatGPT shows product results drawn from web pages and from product data that merchants or their store platforms share with OpenAI. Accurate product pages and complete, consistent product data are what we work on, and we check your platform’s current options during the audit.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It isn’t required. Google says AI text files like llms.txt aren’t needed for its AI features, and no major AI company has said its answers rely on one. It takes minutes to add, so we can include it, but we never sell it as a way to rank.

Should I block AI crawlers from my store?

Usually not the search crawlers. OpenAI and Anthropic run separate crawlers for search and for training, and Perplexity says its crawler isn’t used for training, so you can stay visible in AI answers and still opt out of training. Google and Bing use one crawler for search and AI, so blocking them hurts search too.

I sell on eBay or Amazon. Does AI SEO help?

It can. Marketplace listings are public pages that AI tools can read alongside your store, so we keep titles, item specifics and product facts consistent between your listings and your own store. Your own store is where we can change the most, from structured data to crawler access.

What do you need from me to start?

Your store’s address, admin or collaborator access to your store platform, access to Google Search Console and Merchant Center if you use them, and a list of the products you most want to be found for.
