Free UPC generator and barcode maker

Type 11 digits and get a scannable UPC-A barcode with the check digit worked out, sized to the GS1 standard, as a 300 dpi PNG or an SVG. The tool also makes EAN-13, EAN-8, ITF-14 and Code 128 barcodes. It draws any number you give it, but a UPC for selling on Amazon, Walmart or Google Shopping must be licensed from GS1 (from $30 for one).

How to use it

Make a barcode in four steps

The barcode redraws as you type, and the link in your address bar keeps the number so you can come back to it.

  1. Pick the barcode type

UPC-A for retail products in the US and Canada, EAN-13 for most other countries, EAN-8 for very small packs, ITF-14 for shipping cartons and Code 128 for your own SKUs, letters included.

  2. Type the number

Give all digits except the last and the tool adds the check digit. Give the full number and it checks the last digit, shows the right one if it is wrong, and fixes it in one click.

  3. Set the size

Leave it at 100% unless your printer or packaging asks for something else. GS1 allows 80% to 200% for UPC and EAN; ITF-14 starts at 150% here. Keep the full bar height and the white margins.

  4. Download and test

Download the PNG for labels and documents or the SVG for print artwork. Print one copy and scan it with a phone or a store scanner before you print the whole run.

Inside a UPC

What the 12 digits and the bars mean

036000291452
UPC-A 036000291452 drawn by this tool at 100%.

A UPC-A holds a 12-digit number called a GTIN-12. The first digits are the company prefix that GS1 licensed to the brand owner, the next digits are the item number the brand chose, and the last digit is a check digit worked out from the other 11.

The bars encode each digit as 7 narrow units (modules) of two bars and two spaces. Three longer guard bars mark the start, middle and end, and white margins called quiet zones sit on both sides: 9 modules each side for UPC-A, 11 on the left and 7 on the right for EAN-13. A scanner reads the check digit last and rejects the scan if it doesn’t add up, which is why a typo in one digit almost never scans as a different product.

To work it out by hand, multiply the digits by 3 and 1 in turn, starting with 3 on the digit just left of the check digit, add the results, and take the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10. For the UPC on the left:

0×3 + 3×1 + 6×3 + 0×1 + 0×3 + 0×1 + 2×3 + 9×1 + 1×3 + 4×1 + 5×3
= 58
Check digit = (10 − 58 mod 10) mod 10 = 2
Full number: 036000291452

Barcode types

Which barcode do you need?

UPC-A, EAN-13, EAN-8 and ITF-14 all carry a GTIN, so the same product number can appear in more than one of them. Code 128 carries any text.

BarcodeDigitsUsed forNotes
UPC-A 12 (GTIN-12) Retail products sold in the US and Canada What US marketplaces call a UPC. Scanners worldwide read it.
EAN-13 13 (GTIN-13) Retail products outside North America A UPC-A is an EAN-13 with a leading 0, so 0036000291452 is the same product.
EAN-8 8 (GTIN-8) Very small packs where an EAN-13 won’t fit GTIN-8 numbers are issued one by one by GS1, not made from a company prefix.
ITF-14 14 (GTIN-14) Outer cartons and cases in a warehouse Printed larger, with bearer bars; not for checkout scanning.
Code 128 Any text SKUs, bin locations, shipping and internal labels Not a product ID for marketplaces. GS1-128, its GS1 version, carries shipping data.

Before you print

Where real UPCs come from

Any 12 digits with the right check digit make a barcode that scans. Whether the number is accepted as your product depends on who owns it. GS1 is the only organization that issues company prefixes, and marketplaces check numbers against its records: Amazon and Walmart both say they check product IDs against the GS1 database and recommend getting them straight from GS1.

In the US you license numbers from GS1 US. One GTIN costs $30 with no yearly fee. A company prefix for 10 products costs $250, then $50 a year (GS1 US prices, checked October 2026). With a prefix, you choose the item numbers and this tool works out the check digit and draws the barcode.

Numbers sold cheaply by resellers often come from old prefixes licensed to another company, so the brand on record won’t match yours. Google Merchant Center flags a GTIN that doesn’t belong to the brand you send, and Amazon can remove listings whose numbers don’t match GS1.

For barcodes that never leave your business, use an in-store number: GS1 keeps UPCs that start with 4 for use inside one company. Open “Make an in-store number” above to make one from your own item number.

Marketplace rules

What each marketplace accepts

Checked on each marketplace’s own help pages in October 2026.

MarketplaceRule for UPCsNo barcode?
Amazon Checks UPCs against the GS1 database and recommends getting them directly from GS1, not from resellers. Listings with numbers that don't match GS1 can be removed. Apply for a GTIN exemption (own brand without barcodes, bundles, parts).
Walmart Marketplace Cross-references product IDs with the GS1 database and recommends getting them from GS1. Coupon, refund and restricted circulation numbers are invalid, and an ID registered to one brand can't be used for another. Request a GTIN exemption in Seller Center (private label or handmade).
eBay Asks for a product identifier in most categories. It must exactly match the product you sell. Choose “Does not apply” when the item has no identifier, such as handmade or antique items.
Google Merchant Center Checks the check digit and the prefix, and flags a GTIN that doesn't belong to the brand you submit. Numbers starting 02, 04 or 2 are restricted and are not accepted as GTINs. Send brand and MPN, or identifier_exists = no for custom and one-of-a-kind products.
Shopify Checks a barcode's length and format for its type (UPC 8 or 12 digits, EAN 8 or 13, GTIN 8 to 14). Sales channels such as Google may require a real GTIN. Leave the barcode empty, or use a Custom barcode for your own stock.

Printing

Print barcodes that scan first time

The GS1 numbers below are built into the tool, so a download at 100% already has the right bar height and margins. They matter when you place the barcode on artwork or resize it.

  • Size: GS1 allows 80% to 200% for UPC and EAN. At 100% a UPC-A or EAN-13 is 37.29 mm (1.47 in) wide, margins included. Resize the whole barcode, never just its width.
  • Height: GS1 says not to cut bars short (truncate) unless the pack is too small. Short bars can fail barcode verification and are harder to scan at an angle.
  • Margins: keep the white quiet zones clear of text, edges and folds.
  • Colors: dark bars on a light background. Black, dark blue and dark green work; red, orange, yellow and brown bars look blank to the red light in most scanners. The tool warns you when a color won’t scan.
  • Cartons: print ITF-14 at 150% or more (bars at least 0.495 mm), with the bearer bars the tool adds.
  • Placement: GS1 recommends the lower right of the back of the pack, at least 8 mm from any edge.
  • Files: use the SVG for print artwork, so the bars stay sharp at any size; use the 300 dpi PNG for labels and documents.

UPC lookup

Who owns a barcode number?

This tool makes and checks barcodes; it doesn’t look up products. To see which company a UPC or EAN is licensed to, search it in the GS1 company database. If the company shown isn’t yours, the number won’t pass marketplace checks for your brand, even if its check digit is right.

To check a batch of numbers before you upload a product file, paste them into “Check a list of numbers” above. It checks the length and the check digit of up to 200 numbers at once.

Questions

UPC generator questions

How our projects work
Is this UPC generator free?

Yes. It is free to use for any purpose, including barcodes on products you sell, with no sign-up and no watermark. The barcode is drawn in your browser and nothing you type is sent to us.

Can I make up my own UPC number?

You can make a barcode for any number, and it will scan. To sell on Amazon, Walmart or Google Shopping, the number must be licensed to your brand by GS1, because those marketplaces check numbers against GS1’s records. For your own shop only, use an in-store number that starts with 4.

How much does a real UPC cost?

From GS1 US, one GTIN is $30 with no yearly fee, and a company prefix for up to 10 products is $250 plus $50 a year. Larger prefixes cost more and give you more numbers.

How is the UPC check digit calculated?

Multiply the 11 digits by 3 and 1 in turn, starting with 3 on the first digit, add them up, and take what is needed to reach the next multiple of 10. For 03600029145 the sum is 58, so the check digit is 2 and the full UPC is 036000291452. The tool does this for you.

What is the difference between UPC and EAN?

A UPC-A has 12 digits and is used mainly in the US and Canada; an EAN-13 has 13 digits and is used in most other countries. A UPC-A is an EAN-13 that starts with 0, so the same product can carry either, and scanners worldwide read both.

What size should a UPC barcode be?

GS1 allows 80% to 200% of the standard size. At 100% a UPC-A is 37.29 mm (1.47 in) wide including its white margins, with bars 22.85 mm tall. Keep the full height and the margins when you place it.

Should I download PNG or SVG?

SVG for packaging and print artwork, because it is vector and stays sharp at any size. PNG at 300 dpi for label printers, documents and marketplaces that ask for an image.

Can I use these barcodes on Amazon?

The barcode image is fine; the number is what matters. Amazon checks UPCs against GS1, so use a number licensed to your brand, or apply for a GTIN exemption if your products have no barcode.

What is an in-store barcode?

A UPC that starts with 4. GS1 keeps that range for use inside one company, for shelf labels, stock rooms and your own point of sale. It costs nothing, but it isn’t a valid product ID on marketplaces or Google Shopping.

Which barcode should I use for SKUs and shelf labels?

Code 128 if your SKUs contain letters, because it encodes any text and is compact. Use an in-store UPC if your point-of-sale system only reads UPCs.
