How to use it
Work out a PayPal fee in four steps
The result updates as you type, and the table under it shows the same amount for every other way of getting paid.
Choose what to work out
“I’m getting paid” shows the fee and what lands in your account. “How much to ask for” finds the smallest amount to charge so you receive exactly what you need.
Enter the amount
Type the payment, or the amount you want to end up with. Pick the currency you receive if it isn’t US dollars: the percentage stays the same and the fixed fee changes.
Pick how you’re paid
Checkout buttons, cards, Venmo, Pay Later, invoices, QR codes, in person and goods and services payments each have their own rate. Each one has a note on when it applies.
Tick international if it applies
When the buyer lives outside the US, PayPal adds 1.5% to business payments. Copy the link to share the result.
The formula
How PayPal works out its fee
Each payment costs a percentage of the amount plus a fixed fee that depends on the currency. For PayPal Checkout in US dollars that is 3.49% + $0.49: on $100 the percentage is $3.49, the fixed fee $0.49, and you receive $96.02. With a buyer outside the US the same payment costs $5.48.
To receive an exact amount, divide what you need plus the fixed fee by what is left of each dollar after the percentage. To receive $100 through Checkout, ask for $104.12: PayPal’s fee on that is $4.12, which leaves exactly $100. The calculator checks the answer to the cent, because the formula alone can be a cent out after rounding.
PayPal keeps its fee when you refund a payment: its fee page says the fees you paid to receive the payment are not returned, for full and partial refunds.
Fee = amount × rate + fixed fee
You receive = amount − fee
Amount to ask for = (amount you want + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate) Every rate

Paying less
Ways to lower your PayPal fees
- Invoice large amounts by bank: an invoice paid from a US bank account costs 1% (max $10.00). On a $5,000 invoice that is $10, against $149.99 when the same invoice is paid by card.
- Use goods and services for direct payments: money sent to you for goods or services from a PayPal account costs 2.99%, so $2.99 on $100.
- Take cards on your own checkout: Advanced Credit and Debit Card Payments cost 2.89% + $0.29, less than PayPal Checkout. It needs card fields on your own checkout page.
- Use a QR code in person: QR code payments cost 2.29% + $0.09.
- Avoid conversions: list prices in the currency you want to be paid in, and hold balances in the currencies you receive often, so PayPal doesn’t convert each payment.
- Price the fee in: use “How much to ask for” to set a price or an invoice total that leaves what you need. Our profit margin calculator adds PayPal’s fee to your costs for a full margin.
