A shopping cart can be built from scratch, so you don't have to use an established service with a monthly fee -
however, there are big trade-offs for that:
| TOP FIVE REASONS YOU SHOULDN'T GO OPEN SOURCE WITH YOUR SHOPPING CART | |

More expensive up-front, because it's not just needing designed visually, but manually built, to suit your needs from the ground up - very time-consuming and involved; |

No ongoing tech support - you probably need an in-staff programmer to keep up with your changing needs as you grow; |

No training - you will need to figure everything out about how to use/maintain your site, wtihout help menus, user forums, or live chat; |

No ongoing updates - online services will do regular updates to keep your site compliant with new changes in Internet processes or new requirements by credit card processing companies, etc. |

SECURITY ISSUES!!- if you don't stay 100% up-to-date on your server/ccard processor requirements, your site can be fairly easily hacked! Hackers and identity thieves specifically target these small sites that don't get daily software updates. I recently spoke with one of our clients who spent weeks and weeks building his open source site from scratch, only to have it hacked. NOT something to mess around with. |
