A shopping cart can be built from scratch, so you don't have to use an established service with a monthly fee -
however, there are big trade-offs for that:

Hackers and identity thieves specifically target these small sites that don't get daily software updates. I recently spoke with one of our clients who spent weeks and weeks building his open source site from scratch, only to have it hacked. NOT something to mess around with. |

 Many clients ask me why I recommend Volusion and not open source,my answer is simple. If you don't stay 100% up-to-date on your server and credit card processor requirements, your site can be fairly easily hacked! Hackers and identity thieves specifically target these small sites that don't get daily software updates. I recently spoke with one of our clients who spent weeks and weeks building his os site from scratch only to get hacked, using Volusion means you get not only 24 hour support, but you get security updates automatically included with your, monthly subscription, that alone is enough for me. I don't want any chance of having any information on my client's website taken by a third party who can potentially destroy their business just to save a few dollars a month to go open source.
